Ashaway Wood Shingle Roofs

Location:  Ashaway, RI

Date Completed: March 20, 2003

Some of this complex's list of outbuildings, garages, barns and an 18th century cape required some new wood shingle roofs. HRI removed the wood shingle roofs from the garage, the office, the outhouse and a well house and reinstalled hand nailed 18" perfection red cedar shingles. The exposures were set at unique exposures of 4-1/2" and 3-1/2" on the garage and office respectively.

Slatersville Kitchen and Improvements

Location:  Slatersville, RI

Date Completed: April 2003

This 18th century mill house is part of the Slatersville Mill complex and housing developed by some of the earliest American textile manufacturers. The house comprises of two construction periods, the earliest around 1780 and later changes around 1810 and into the 1980's. The client's intent was to remodel one of the kitchens, complete with "English" flavor cabinetry, granite countertops and modern appliances. The floors were repaired and refinished, the plaster redone, as well as electrical and plumbing upgrades. HRI also restored some of the original windows, refit and repaired original 4 panel doors with the appropriate hardware and completed several miscellaneous "fix up" jobs around the house.

Location:  Wilton, CT

Date Completed: May 2003

Owner:  National Park Service

Heritage Restoration, Inc. had the unique opportunity to reconstruct a hand split picket and rail fence for the park, while also providing training and educational exposure to our apprentice, WEFA volunteers and students. The project involves "splitting" the pickets from cedar logs, providing the natural look indicative of the fence J. Alden Weir had commissioned back in the late 19th century. The cedar posts were reset in the original locations, based on extensive research by the Olmstead Landscape Design Center, National Park Service, in both earth and on steel pins set in stone. Every effort was made to retain current landscape features and plant materials, reproduce original features and techniques, while more modern hardware and improved construction techniques were introduced. This is part of the continued cooperation between WEFA and the Preservation Training and Education Institute, Inc. to provide construction services in conjunction with trades training and education

Homelands

Location:  Tiverton, RI

Date Completed: December 2003

Heritage Restoration, Inc. was partnering with Abcore Restoration Co. Inc. for the first time. Abcore was the principle contractor of the project, while HRI provided the day to day site management as well as some of the craftsmen for the project. The project's intent was to rehabilitate, restore and modernize this neglected 1760 farmhouse, and all of its late 19th century additions. The owner's desire was to maintain the integrity of the design, while introducing such modern amenities as master and secondary bathrooms, a high velocity HVAC system, electrical and sound systems and a wonderful attached modern glass atrium. The house first required extensive framing repairs and upgrading, and the field stone foundation required extensive repairs and reconstruction. The basement was dug out, drainage was installed and a new basement concrete floor was installed. The chimneys were reconstructed from the roof line up, and new bluestone chimney caps were installed. The windows were removed and restored, as well as the lead paint being removed from original exterior features. Upon residing, all original treatments were either saved or reproduced, being reapplied to accommodate the new wood shingle siding, the wood gutters and the wood shingle roof, complete with all lead coated copper valleys and flashing. HRI saw the exterior of the building completed, while awaiting the interior features to be defined for the next phase.
