Bridgeton School

Location:  Burrillville, RI

Date Completed: September 2005

The Burrillville Historical and Preservation Society has again reserved the services of HRI to complete additional work on the exterior of the school. After over a year of studies and surveys, HRI is completing: removal of the blown in insulation in the wall cavities; selective clapboard replacement; trim and element selective replacement; door restoration and rehanging with appropriate ADA hardware, third floor window restoration; repainting of exterior. The insulation removal is a hot topic amongst preservationists and energy conservationists. While blown-in insulation can provide an improvement on energy or heat loss, building lacking an exterior vapor barrier and moist basements can lead to excess moisture trapped in insulation. This caused the siding's paint to peel from the wood in sheets from moisture being pulled out from the wall cavity. With confirmation of moisture from engineers, HRI chose to remove the insulation from the wall cavities, but keep the insulation in the ceiling joists.

Westerly Armory

Location:  Westerly, RI

Date Completed: December 2005

The Westerly Armory is another recipient of the state preservation grant. HRI was contracted to restore the original doors that were removed some time ago and sat in the basement. The doors had to be completely broken down in some places, reproducing and reconstructing the wood elements, stripped of all finishes, refinished, re hung and new ADA compliant door hardware. HRI was also contracted to reconstruct and restore two arch top windows that have been bricked over for over 20 years.

Vinyl is no Longer Final

Location:  Providence, RI

Date Completed: August 2005

This charming 19th century double decker was attacked by the vinyl salesmen in the 80's. HRI was previously contracted to reconstruct the front porches, and returned to complete the rest of the house. The work included removing the vinyl, repairing the siding, soffits, roofs, flashing and replacing the vinyl windows with more appropriate Boston Sash. Today the house is reborn, and let the pictures speak for themselves.
